Instant messaging allows us to communicate with multiple people in our network at the same time depending on the number of windows opened on our computer screen. It has reinvented the way we correspond with one another and enabled us to join or leave conversations as we wish. Starting a new conversation has become as simple as clicking on another person’s name in a buddy list. Dynamics of an IM Conversation attempts to make visible the abstract quality of multi-tasking that takes place within instant messaging. Our ability to immediately picture someone else laugh, cringe, or smile on the other side of the conversation thread is what makes instant messaging a lively and vital program. By literally infusing the human into the abstraction, I try to include the “subtext” of how we communicate that is more accurate of the actual, live experience.
