The inter-departmental envelope is a common and analog method of sending printed matter within an organization that is still very much in practice today. The history of its travel is noted on the front and back of the container as the lines get filled up; the network of users within the organization is revealed through its circulation. As the envelope gets re-used over and over again, the relationships between the sender and receiver and consequently its travel, becomes more complicated and convoluted — yet how has the design of the form compensated for this? While keeping the overall format of the envelope as close to existing samples as possible, I created eight new designs that are currently in circulation at RISD.
